WEST CORK TRAVELLERS (WCT) is a Traveller-led community development
organisation providing a range of services to the Traveller Community
across West Cork. With its main base in Clonakilty the organisation
provides outreach services to Bantry, Macroom, Skibbereen, and Bandon.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Community Development/Support Worker. TEMPORARY POST **Apply on

rata full-time & commensurate with experience).

BASE AND HOURS OF WORK: The post will be based at the West Cork
Travellers Centre in Clonakilty with some travel. Usual hours of work
are 9am to 5pm Monday to Wednesday with some out of hours work
expected. This temporary post will be **Apply on the website** hours

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To improve the quality of life and promote equality
for Travellers through the support and development of a range of
programmes and initiatives based on the needs of the Traveller
Community in West Cork. The post holder will be expected to work
within the context of the social determinants of health.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

In line with WCT strategic work-plan and using a community development
approach, work with Travellers to deliver a range of initiatives which
respond to identified needs within the Traveller community. These will
include supports, activities and events for different sectors and age
groups within the community, in response to issues that affect their
lives.

Work in a way that will enhance people?s self-confidence and
capacity for both self-advocacy and collective action in relation to
aspects of their own lives, including health and well-being, the broad
determinants of health such as accommodation, training and culture,
and wider equality issues.

OTHER DUTIES:

* Identify Travellers in the catchment area and undertake outreach.
* Undertake advocacy work on behalf of individuals and families
including the provision of assistance and supports relating to
accommodation, education, health, discrimination, employment,
ethnicity etc.
* Provide a drop in service at existing centres as required.
* Facilitate current groups and develop new groups and training
initiatives across the catchment area.
* With Traveller Community Health Workers, develop and deliver a
range of agreed health and other events throughout the year, including
Traveller Pride initiatives.
* Organise trainers to deliver on specific health and other topics
to groups.
* Promote the work of West Cork Travellers within statutory and
non-statutory agencies and link where appropriate with relevant
national/local strategies and initiatives.
* Represent the organisation and Travellers on relevant committees
and fora as agreed and support Traveller participation thereon.
* Work as part of the Health & Development team and in partnership
with other key staff on specific initiatives.
* Undertake the evaluation of all programmes and record key
performance indicators in accordance with regional and national
requirements and good practice.
* Provide monthly work reports to Management.
* Source and make applications for specific funding initiatives in
conjunction with Management.
* Manage budgets for specific programmes as required.
* Attend regular supervision as directed by the CEO.
* Maintain confidential records in line with WCT policy.
* Abide by all WCT policies and procedures.
* Undertake any other duties as commensurate with the post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will be a vibrant and dynamic person who has
proven capacity in support and advocacy. They will have the ability to
work under their own direction and as a member of a team. She/He will
have the following essential and desirable attributes:

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

* 3rd level qualification in Community Development, Social Care,
Family Support or equivalent and/or training in Community work or a
relevant field
* Minimum of 2 years experience working with Travellers or other
disadvantaged groups.
* A thorough understanding of Traveller issues, particularly in
relation to Traveller health.
* Understanding of the social determinants of health.

EXPERIENCE

* 3yrs experience of project management or equivalent.
* Experience of team management specifically, staff support and
supervision
* Experience of working with Travellers or in a Traveller
organisation
* Experience of report writing including: funding proposals,
applications and evaluation reports etc.

SKILLS AND CAPACITIES

* A demonstrable commitment to human rights and social justice and a
commitment to work from an anti-racist and equality work perspective
* Demonstrated capacity to work on your own initiative and as part
of a team;
* Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills
* Excellent IT skills
* Ability to work with a wide range of networks and agencies
* Be dependable and flexible
* Be prepared to travel as part of your work
* Full clean drivers? licence and access to own transport
